Contrave is a prescription-only diet pill that is FDA approved for the treatment of obesity. Although the FDA originally declined approval of this drug in 2011, due to concerns over long-term cardiovascular safety, it was finally approved by the FDA in September 2014 after subsequent clinical trials demonstrated its efficacy and safety.

What Are the Active Contrave Ingredients?

The Contrave formula is composed of two active ingredients:

  • Bupropion – This is an antidepressant drug that also has the ability to lower appetite.
  • Naltrexone – This is primarily given to block the effects of narcotics or alcohol in individuals with addiction problem and may also reduce hunger and food cravings.

These two medications work together on separate parts of the brain to decrease appetite and how much food a person consumes.

As such, due to the nature of these ingredients, Contrave is considered to be an anorexiant. This is a type of drug that acts on the brain to suppress appetite and is believed to help control satiety by having a stimulant effect on the hypothalamic and limbic regions. Anorexiants are primarily used for the treatment of obesity in combination with diet and exercise.

Although Contrave can help with weight loss, which can reduce many health risks that are linked to obesity, such as heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes, Contrave will not treat any of these weight-related medical conditions. Furthermore, in spite of containing an antidepressant, this medication has not been approved for treating depression, anxiety or any other psychiatric conditions.

Side Effects to Consider

Contrave, like all prescription weight loss drugs, is linked to adverse effects. Some of these include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Stomach pain
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Flushing
  • Increase sweating
  • Dry mouth
  • Strange taste in mouth

If any of these or other more serious side effects (e.g. mental/mood changes, uncontrolled movements, severe headache, fast/pounding/irregular heartbeat, chest pain, etc.) occur, tell your doctor right away.

To reduce your risk of experiencing side effects, it is important to take this medication exactly as it has been prescribed to you. Contrave is an oral medication and is usually taken with a low-fat meal, twice daily, as directed by your prescribing doctor. To prevent difficulty sleeping, avoid taking this medication too close to bedtime. This medication works best when it is taken consistently, so try to take it at the same time each day.

If weight loss has not occurred after 16 weeks of taking Contrave, inform your doctor.
